BACKGROUND
Falwell is a key figure in the Christian Television ministry and his
"Old Time Gospel Hour" has aired for over 40 years. He leads the 22,000
member Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, VA. Known for spearheading
the Moral Majority, he claimed the character Tinky-Winky on the PBS
children's show "TeleTubbies" had homosexual undertones. His organization's
tax-exempt status is currently under scrutiny due to his efforts to
get his followers to donate to a conservative PAC.
PREMISE
OF THE SUIT
CLUBS are persons whose successful media activities influence public
opinion or whose organizing and lobbying activities give them influence
"behind the scenes," invisible to the public. They wield
power because you and your representatives in the Congress chose to
view, listen or read what they have to say, or because of the access
they gain through large political contributions.
